Hidden Gem of the Wheeling and Lake Eire

There are many hidden gems of model railroading, rail attractions, and history throughout Ohio, The Great Lakes, and the Ohio Valley regions.

Everyone knows of the Ohio Outlet Station (formerly Lodi Central Outlets) off I-71,  with their miniature railroad. Everyone in the railroad community even know of the Northern Ohio Railroad Museum in nearby Seville.(another trip, another time…we must visit according to the folks in Lodi)

But; the hardcore railroad enthusiasts, Wheeling and Lake Erie fans, and Northern Ohio rail folk know of the humble yet refreshing Lodi Depot. And now so does the rest of the world.

Last year they start having more frequent open houses. Brian Brown (OHRRer/OVR contributor and admin) and myself visited their May open house (Saturday May 12th) with great vast improvements.

The volunteers have worked hard on improving electric connections, gas heat for colder temps, and physical improvements on the Depot structure itself.

Although next to the W&LE line that goes through Lodi; it also has a great view of the former B&O mainline now operated by CSX Transportation.

It is also near the Norfolk Southern lines as well. So railfanning nearby offers many options. Lodi is in close proximity of Seville, Greenwich, West Salem and other Northern Ohio/North Central Ohio spots.

Lodi offers many dining experiences. But, the most unique is Cruisers Restaurant off State Route 421. The main front windows face the CSX main line. This line leads to the Black River Crossing viaduct southwest of town.

I highly encourage to not only explore Lodi and the nearby areas but visit the W&LE Depot when events and open houses gain access.
