To the unsuspecting eye, the storefront of Chris Schultz’s hobby shop is humble off Wright Brothers Parkway on Dorothy Lane Drive.

It is literally minutes from the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

But, once you enter…..Chris chirps and says, “Welcome to Schultz’s Hobbies, how can we help you?”

The model railroad veteran has been a fixture in Dayton modeling circles for years.

He does indeed sell kites, model rockets, and various other hobby stock.

But 80 to 90 percent of the store is model trains. A Lionel and HO layout faces each store window.

Many buildings new and used line the shelves. Scenic material as far as you can see. G Scale, HO, N, and other model supplies.

This is an old school feel shop with new school tools.

He uses Square for credit card payments. He buys, sells and trades with not just physical customers but folks on the internet.

He is a authorized dealer for practically every major model railroad company and manufacturer.

This keeps getting better.

I wind up in a great conversation with Chris for nearly an hour.

He speaks how he built a well known O Scale layout that stood at the Upper Valley Mall for many years. He has helped Crossroads Model Railroad Club (HO), Dayton N Trak, and many other modelers in the area.

This is a business owner who not only is invested with the community he resides, he is invested with growing the hobby.

“I don’t how many times I have had kids come in here or a train show and get hooked. There are kids who love trains, Thomas, Polar Express and the Big Boy is what brought them in,” he stated about the future of the hobby.

He also wishes that all local hobby shops recover from the COVID-19 shutdown.

“If you have one hundred folks come in and spend $20 each… most of these local hobby shops can recover from the COVID-19 shutdown…”

I really can’t argue with that logic…

Whether you live in the Dayton-Springfield area or wish a day trip; Schultz’s is worth a stop by. You just might become a lief long customer.

Let’s help him help grow the hobby of model railroading even more.
