Heading down to Nelsonville, Ohio; right off US Route 33, is literally like stepping back in time.
The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway, since 1972; has been transporting passengers back into a time of train travel for families to enjoy the ride.
Myself, my wife Tanya, and Hannah has been visiting the area for several years; but I have never chronicled our visit until now. Well over due, I must say…
Here is the descprition of the train ride we took via HVSR’s website on Sunday….

“2:30 P.M. TO EAST LOGAN
Our East Logan train is the longest of the regular weekend trains and operates every Saturday and Sunday between Memorial Day and the last full weekend of October. The train departs the Nelsonville Depot for a round-trip ride along the historic Hocking River Valley. Along the way, we will pass through the historic company town of Haydenville, which was the last company town in Ohio. It was once part of a large brick and clay company known in its later days as NATCO. Other sights along the trip include one of the remaining Hocking Canal locks, an active gravel mine, the Hocking River, and, of course, the hills of the Hocking River Valley!
Duration of ride: Approximately two hours”
Issac Miller, a young crew member; gave me some insight on how hard the train crew work.
“We enjoy folks riding our railroad; it’s great to have so many people come to take in the area riding our train”
Issac, George (a trainman) and Bill (a conductor, both George and Bill were Army veterans) were part of our great experience.
Various families from all walks of life were part of the trip. There are various train rides throughout the year for folks to enjoy.
-Thunder in The Valley 4th of July Fireworks
-Beer and Wine Tasting Trains
-Fall Foliage Rides
-Historic stops included regularly Robbins Crossing with a 1880’s village on weekends
-and of course the Santa Trains from Thanksgiving up until Christmas
-New Years Eve Train Ride as well
